The masseter is the thick muscle at the back of the jaw, between the cheekbone and the angle of the jaw. You can feel it tighten if you place your fingers there and bite down. It is one of the strongest muscles in the body for its size, and its job is chewing.
In people who clench or grind their teeth — known as bruxism — the masseter contracts repeatedly, often during sleep or at moments of stress or concentration. Over months and years this can cause jaw pain and stiffness, tenderness in front of the ear, headaches at the temples, worn or chipped teeth, cracked fillings and, in some people, a visibly wider, square lower face as the muscle enlarges.
Jaw clenching is also closely linked with temporomandibular joint (TMJ or TMD) discomfort. The TMJ is the hinge joint in front of the ear. When the surrounding muscles are constantly tight, the joint area can ache, click or feel restricted. Not every TMJ problem comes from muscle overactivity, which is why assessment matters before treatment.

Botulinum toxin is a purified medicine that reduces the signal from a nerve to a muscle. Placed carefully into the masseter, it lowers the strength of that muscle's contraction without stopping you from chewing, speaking or smiling normally. Masseter Botox is usually considered for adults whose symptoms are mainly from muscle overactivity. During consultation our dermatologist feels the muscle at rest and while you bite, looks at facial balance, and asks about your symptoms and medical history.
It may not be suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with certain neuromuscular conditions, with infection at the injection site, or with some medicines. If jaw pain comes with locking, a recent injury, swelling, fever or a change in your bite, we will advise seeing a dentist, maxillofacial specialist or your GP first.

Your visit begins with a medical consultation. The dermatologist confirms the diagnosis, explains whether Botox is a sensible option for you, marks the injection points and agrees a dose. If you decide to go ahead the same day, treatment itself usually takes only a few minutes. If you would rather think about it, there is no pressure — a consultation does not commit you to treatment.
A dermatologist consultation at Glow & Go is PKR 2,000. Treatment prices are listed below and are confirmed after assessment, because the right dose depends on muscle size and strength.

The treatment, step by step

After cleansing the skin, the dermatologist asks you to clench so the muscle can be mapped precisely. A few small injections are placed into the lower, thicker part of each masseter, away from the smile muscles. Most people describe it as quick pinches; topical numbing is rarely needed.
You can return to work or university straight away. For the rest of the day we ask you not to massage the area, lie flat for about four hours, do strenuous exercise, or have facials and saunas, so the medicine stays where it was placed.
Effects start after about three to seven days, with the full effect on clenching usually by two weeks. Slimming of a wide jaw, when it happens, develops more gradually over six to eight weeks. We book a review at around two weeks so the dermatologist can check balance and comfort.

How long does it last, and how often is it repeated?

For clenching and grinding, results commonly last around three to six months. Many people repeat treatment when they notice the old tension returning. With regular sessions over the first year, some find they need treatment less often, as the habit and muscle bulk both reduce.
We prefer the smallest dose that controls your symptoms. Starting conservatively lowers the chance of side effects and lets us adjust at review. You probably need less than you think.

Side effects and safety

Most side effects are mild and short-lived: small bumps or redness at injection points for a few minutes, occasional tenderness, or a small bruise. Some people notice that chewing very tough foods feels tiring for the first few weeks.
Less commonly, an uneven smile can occur if the medicine spreads to nearby muscles; this is why precise placement by an experienced doctor matters. Rarely, with repeated high doses, the cheek area can look slightly hollow. Any concern after treatment should be reported to us on WhatsApp so the dermatologist can review you.
Botox is a prescription medicine. It should be given by a qualified doctor using genuine, properly stored product, after a medical assessment. Be cautious of very cheap offers, home visits or salons offering jaw injections.
